Is the Situation of Polish Public Hospitals Healthy? Indebtedness Analysis

Abstract

Polish healthcare sector has been struggling against financial problems for more than a decade. Hence, the assessment of financial performance of the healthcare sector and the indication of sources of that situation tend to be inevitable. That is why the main objective of the study is to assess the financial condition of public hospitals in Poland in years 2007–2017 in terms of their indebtedness. On the basis of gathered data, an in-depth analysis has been conducted. As a result, not only has the indebtedness field been evaluated, but also a proprietary indicator of the indebtedness of individuals has been created – “unhealthy debt”. This indicator was created in a quantitative and valuable perspective. On its basis, it was assessed that the overwhelming majority of public hospitals in Poland have “unhealthy debt”, i.e. in excess of 40%. Those results will be of great help in the process of evaluating the quality of financial management of Polish hospitals.
