Abstract

The paper outlines the main shifts in passenger and freight dynamics at the Timisoara International Airport—“Traian Vuia” within the last decade that have influenced the strategic decisions and vision of the airport’s management board. Increased traffic figures have sourced plans and projects for future development as well as compliance challenges from the airline industry to continuously realign airport procedures and specifications to meet standards and mandatory requirements. The paper analyzes the strategic development plan of the airport to integrate a sustainable, functional and effective logistics concept within the airport area and uses the case research method to describe how the different environmental challenges have impacted the integration of green policies in the urban area. Data and indicators within the last decade are analyzed and compared to provide an overview of passenger and freight dynamics and future perspectives. Results show that drivers of future competitiveness are mainly linked with adaptation to market specifics, proactive anticipation of its dynamics and providing a sustainable logistics concept. The research conducts an analysis of the Timisoara International Airport’s strategic development plan in its initial boundaries, prompted by the intent to source a long-term integrated green urban logistics concept and enhance its competitive position.
