Abstract

Last couple of years transformed blockchain into an emerging topic in the business literature, changing the scientific literature background, typically focused on blockchain’s technological issues and cryptocurrencies. They say that in 2015 blockchain has truly entered the business world. The increased popularity of the topic concretizes in an augmented number of conference papers and dedicated workshops, along with “call for papers” in academic journals. In this context, the paper reviews the 2015–2019 non-technical literature on blockchain having as goal to provide a structured knowledge on blockchain concepts and applications. Our findings reveal that the blockchain’s projected implications are significant and are expected to cover a varied range of industries but for the moment, the implementation of applications on an extensive basis is in an initial stage. This paper may contribute to the blockchain information and learning proliferation, providing a common basis of blockchain theoretical concepts and gives a solid starting point for further research of blockchain integration with business information systems.
