Future of Food Economics

Abstract

Food and agriculture are at the center of a confluence of global policy issues dubbed “grand challenges”. This confluence includes issues long associated with food and agriculture such as food security, nutrition, obesity, and environmental degradation. High profile research suggests radical, rapid, and global changes to the agri-food system that would dramatically impact virtually all humans. Importantly, this proposal appears to ignore the economic and social cost of the changes demanded, the heterogeneous nature of societies impacted as well as the resources available to those societies. Historic parallels are drawn to similar efforts of the past, urging a more cautious and marginal approach.
