Temporal and Spatial Patterns of Ship Accidents in Arctic Waters from 2006 to 2019

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to investigate the ship accidents in Arctic waters from 2006 to 2019 and reveal their temporal and spatial patterns. Maritime activity in the Arctic is increasing due to multiple factors, such as the melting of sea ice, oil and gas development, and so on. To improve maritime safety, analysis of previous ship accidents is required. Based on Lloyds Casualty Archive database, this paper analyzed the ship accidents occurring north of $$66^\circ 34^\prime $$ 66 ∘ 34 ′ . The Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) method was used to identify the accident-prone seas. The results show that in Arctic waters, fishing ships are the most accident-prone ship types. The most prone type of non-fishing ships is passenger ship, followed by general cargo ship. From 2006 to 2019, the number of ship accidents in Arctic waters fluctuated, and it began to show a downward trend in 2017. Most ship accidents occur in the Eastern Hemisphere in Arctic waters, and the most accident-intensive sea area is the water near port of Murmansk. Although ship accidents in Arctic waters rarely cause pollution, the proportion of serious accidents is relatively high, accounting for about half of all accidents. These findings can be helpful for accident prevention in Arctic waters.
