Abstract

The German federal government has set up the goal of 10 million electric cars on German roads by 2030 and is aiming for the complete electrification of road traffic by 2050. Currently, the focus is particularly on the development of charging infrastructure for battery electric vehicles (BEVs), with 1 million publicly accessible charging stations to be built by 2030. However, the expansion of hydrogen infrastructure is also being supported with large subsidies. Although there are numerous studies on either the cost of charging infrastructure for BEVs or fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), there are few comparative research results available so far. In this study, therefore, a model for the spatial distribution of charging infrastructure for BEVs and FCEVs is first developed for the district of Steinburg in the German federal state of Schleswig–Holstein. In a second step, the results and corresponding economic costs are compared in a real options analysis for the period 2021 to 2050, considering different charging infrastructure expansion curves. In addition to the hardware infrastructure costs, operations and maintenance and electricity or hydrogen costs for the charging infrastructure are explicitly taken into account.
