Novel Planning Problems in E-commerce Warehousing

Abstract

E-commerce led to drastic changes in end consumer behavior over the last years. In consequence, today’s retailers often need to provide online channels to stay attractive and competitive. The logistic processes behind this online front-end, needed to smoothly ship small orders, picked from a large assortment in little time, however, are complex and differ from classical warehousing processes to a large extent. As a result, novel warehousing systems have evolved. These can either be adaptions of classical warehousing systems or novel warehousing systems, often based on new technological developments. This paper summarizes today’s challenges and describes some new planning problems in modern e-commerce warehouses.
