A Systems Integration view on Data Ecosystems

Abstract

Ecosystems comprise complex webs of affiliated entities, characterized by multilateral connections that transcend bilateral relationships, encompassing dependencies across dimensions. Participants in ecosystems are interconnected through resource dependencies and product/service offerings, fostering collaboration, innovation, and knowledge generation. A crucial aspect of digital ecosystems is the continuous data interaction and exchange. Collaboration among actors in these networks drives innovation, value creation, and new business establishment by discovering, storing, publishing, consuming, and reusing data. Technology plays a pivotal role in ecosystem formation, as digital data proliferation and advancements reinforce their significance beyond administrative support. Data have become pervasive resources for knowledge acquisition and action in response to challenges. In the current landscape of data ecosystems, integrating technologies, processes, and data presents increasingly complex challenges. Examining this phenomenon through the systems integration literature offers valuable insights for managing interdependencies and complexities within data ecosystems.
