An Entropy-Weighted Clustering Method for Environmental Pollution Assessment in China

Abstract

Environmental pollution becomes a major problem in China recently. There have been many studies about the interrelationships among environmental pollution, economic development and foreign direct investment (FDI). However, most of the studies only focus on the relationship between environmental pollution and economic development. In this paper, we proposed an entropy-weighted clustering method to assess the impacts on environment using the data of different waste-disposals, GDP and foreign total investment from all provinces in China excluding Tibet between 2002 and 2007. A dynamic synthetic evaluation process which integrates various algorithms such as Dynamic synthetic evaluation, K-means clustering analysis and simple weighted average methods is proposed for the entropy-weighted clustering method. The results indicate that the proposed method can precisely measure the level of environmental pollution and also identify the impacts of economic development and FDI on environment.
