Abstract

America’s research universities matured during the formative period between the Civil War and World War I, a time of remarkable change. Universities now have the opportunity to transform again through systematic change, coupling innovation with trust, both inside through their own practices and offerings and outside through societal impact. Cornell University is provided as an example of how a university founded in the nineteenth century achieved dramatic change through a new venture, establishing an innovation-focused campus in New York City.
