Abstract

This chapter begins with a generic introduction to the concept, definitions and objectives of microfinance. With this description as a prelude, the author cites how microfinance as a concept, emerged in the global and Indian markets. The competing thinking frames that underpinned a paradigm shift in Indian microfinance initiatives, from the government subsidized credit delivery mechanisms to the specialized private financial intermediaries called microfinance institutions (MFIs), are portrayed in this chapter. Against this backdrop, the sustainability challenges and issues faced by Indian MFIs are surveyed, to draw the aim and objectives of the research investigation undertaken in this book. The author concludes this chapter by describing how she plans to pursue and present this research investigation in the subsequent chapters of this book.
