Abstract

The Healthcare Delivery System is defined as the comprehensive collection of actors, stakeholders, and the relationships amongst them, which when in action deliver care to the patients, create economic value for the participants, serve government interests and service societal needs. When thinking about the healthcare delivery system it’s beneficial to think in terms of a value chain. Lacking this integrated view in research leads to a one dimensional assessment or fails to consider views of all the stakeholders in illustrating the problem space (Chaudhry et al., 2006). Figure 2.1 is an illustration of the Healthcare Delivery System in context of usage, adoption, and diffusion of HIT centered on the patient, provider, and payer. The following sections will describe in detail the significance, impact, and influence of each of the components as it partitions to delivery of healthcare and diffusion of Health Information Technology.
