Complex Domain Learning

Abstract

New information and communications technologies have introduced new possibilities for learning and transformed the design of instructional and performance environments in the last 20 years or so (Ganesan et al. 2001; Morgan et al. 2006; Morgan and Spector 2004). At the same time, research in cognitive science has led instructional technologists to think about new ways to support learning and the development of expertise (Schwier et al. 2006; Spector 2004a, b, c; Spector and Anderson 2000; Spector et al. 2005a, b). Along with the advent of new technologies and approaches is an interest in and emphasis on learning and performance in complex domains (e.g., complex and dynamic systems involving tasks such as crisis management, environmental planning, social policy formulation, etc.) (Dörner 1996; Spector 2006a, b; Sterman 1994). This chapter focuses on recent research and developments involving technology-supported learning and performance in complex domains.
