Abstract

This paper explores the nature of the distribution of Greek painted pottery and argues on the basis of the distinctive features of this distribution that various possible types of trade and exchange can be ruled out. In particular, it establishes the importance of the middleman’s knowledge of the market to the distribution pattern, but argues that if we are to understand change over time then we have to allow that the painters of the pots were in the end responsible for the nature and range of imagery available for sale.
