Abstract

First, an overview of Röpke’s life and tremendous work is given. Next, his universal-historical secular analysis of modernity is outlined to understand his humanist philosophy and concept of man and society. Then, his theoretical contributions to economic theory in general are summarized, followed by specific topics like his reflections on business cycle theory and crisis diagnosis in the Weimar republic and his concepts for Germany and Europe after World War II. Finally, Röpke’s overall record and his contemporary significance for ecological economics are highlighted and defended against conservative and one-sided market-liberal misinterpretations of his specific ordoliberalism.
