Abstract

This chapter provides, first, a critical account of Friedrich Engels’ maiden paper Outlines of a Critique of Political Economy (1844) in which he launched a frontal assault on political economy, especially the classical economists from Adam Smith to David Ricardo. The paper had a deep impact on Karl Marx and prompted him to turn to political economy. This chapter then traces the impact of the essay on Marx: Which of Engels’ views did Marx adopt and retain in his mature writings, which did he modify and which did he abandon? In addition, this chapter has a brief look at Engels as the editor of volumes II and III of Capital. Finally, this chapter asks whether some of the shortcomings of the Marx-Engels intellectual and political project have their roots in a neglect of what the classical economists had to say about human self-seeking behaviour and how to contain the dark sides of it.
