Abstract

The is an interview with Shuang Song and her parents in Jilin with a focus on her story. She was a Special Olympics medal winner in both international and reginal games. Her story emphasizes her parents’ positive expectation for her and its empowering effect. The interview also introduces the appropriate and individualized education she had received in the special education school, which contributed to her success in sports, self-confidence, and independent living skills. Her story indicates both good practice and limitations of special education to identify and nurture areas of strength of students with intellectual disabilities. It imposes questions on how education beyond special education school can develop support to help them reach their full potentials.
