Abstract

In this October 2021 interview, Uwe Schulte talks with Chever Voltmer, former Plastics Initiative Director at Ocean Conservancy, about the pressing issue of ocean plastics. Voltmer, who has an extensive background in international marine debris issues, shares her deep personal and professional connection to ocean conservation. She outlines the multifaceted work of Ocean Conservancy, emphasizing their Trash Free Seas Alliance dedicated to tackling marine debris. Voltmer highlights the severity of ocean plastic pollution, noting that 11 million metric tonnes of trash enter the ocean annually. She discusses the importance of preventing plastic pollution at the source and improving waste management systems globally. Voltmer also describes innovative projects like trash traps in Vietnam’s Red River and the Global Ghost Gear Initiative aimed at mitigating the impact of abandoned fishing gear. She underscores the vital role of companies in reducing plastic use, improving recycling infrastructure, and engaging in collaborative efforts to address this global challenge.
