Abstract

This research paper focused on the review of the creative process employed by industrial design students to develop culture-oriented design products. The study embarks on a multifaceted journey to unravel the dynamics of creativity within the focus of this research to enhance the pedagogical approach. Then, the research examines existing literature, drawing insights from previous works such as Wang et al. (Design Issue, 15(2), 46–57, 2000) and Moalosi’s et al. (International Journal of Technology and Design Education, 20(2), 175–190, 2008) framework for crafting culture-infused design products, Sherry and Myers (IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication, 41(2), 123–139, 1998) exploration of collaborative dynamics in design classrooms, and Kampylis’s and Berki (Nurturing creative thinking educational practices series—25, 2014) exposition on the pivotal role of interactive curriculum in nurturing creativity, to establish a background of this research. The research methodology unfolds across four key stages of data collection. Beginning with the literature review to highlight the significance of this study, the study then transitions to classroom observations, keenly examining the creative process in action. Progressing further, the study investigates the shift of this process as it engages with industries and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), thereby reflecting actual market practices. Finally, the feedback from the activities bridges the traditional academic approach by integrating industry participation, which suggests a refined academic approach in industrial design studio courses. This research endeavours to review the process of creativity within industrial design education, shedding light on the intricate journey of students as they explore the process of culture-oriented product design. By amalgamating theoretical support, practical observations, and forward-looking insights, this study aims to catalyse the evolution of pedagogical approaches, thereby enriching the value of industrial design education for the future.
