Recycling Awareness Through Mobile Application: Selecting the Categories of Recyclable Materials for Environmental Well-Being

Abstract

A mobile application is a software program that runs on a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet computer. Even though the application is generally small computing units with minimal features, it continues to provide the consumer with outstanding resources. Malaysians generate 30,000 tonnes of waste per day on average. Just 5% of it is reprocessed. These two figures were recently released by Malaysia’s Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing, and Local Government, and they are creating significant problems for the country. There are two problem statements that will be discussed in this subtopic. The problem states are waste management issues that keep occurring often and users lack information on how to recycle the component to the right channel and the percentage of people who realize the importance of recycling is still minimal. This research aim is to develop a mobile application for recycling programs using Adobe Animate. It will concentrate on spreading awareness of recycling for (1) medication disposal, (2) skincare packaging, and (3) textiles and fabrics for a better environment in the future. Thus, these research objectives are (1) to identify categories of recyclable materials for different types of waste for environmental well-being; (2) to develop a mobile application to increase recycling awareness among users; and (3) to evaluate the effectiveness of the mobile application for the recycling program. This project used the ADDIE model for the mobile application development process which consists of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. According to the result, 90% of respondents strongly agree with the awareness of the recycling program through the mobile application; and 50% of the respondents strongly agree and 50% agree that the mobile application is effective to use for the recycling program. As a result, this mobile application will be able to increase recycling awareness among users and assist them in choosing the appropriate categories of recyclable materials for different types of waste for environmental well-being.
