Developing an ERP Skills Programme to Build ICT Capacity for Disadvantaged South African Youths

Abstract

Information and communication technology (ICT) skills such as problem solving, team work, communication, planning, numerical and IT skills are emerging as essential ingredients for graduate employability and job acquisition among South African (SA) youths. The unemployment problem is more pronounced among black youths. Capacity building builds independence especially for trained disadvantaged youth groups by equipping them with relevant skills and expertise for sustainable development. Using the action research method of a case study approach, an enterprise resource planning (ERP) skills development programme was developed. The programme was designed to integrate a combination of Kolb’s 4-stage experiential learning (EL) model, Billet’s instruction method approach EL framework to achieve the programme’s objectives of learner capacity, empowerment and employability. The findings revealed that the framework can help in empowering SA youths with skills needed to get jobs or probably become entrepreneurs.
