Abstract

In September 2015, the UN Generally Assembly embraced the International Labour Organisations Agenda on decent workDecent work for sustainable developmentSustainable Developments. Formally known as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development2030 agenda for sustainable development, the agenda is made up of 17 sustainable goals and targets. SDG8SDG8, focuses on promoting inclusive economic growthEconomic growth, full and productive employment and decent workDecent work for all. The decent workDecent work component of SDG8SDG8 is anchored on four pillars namely job creation, rights at work, social protection and social dialogueSocial dialogue. Notably, the objectives of the SDGs Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are interlinked with the objectives of the Southern African Development Community (SADC)Southern African Development Community (SADC) which are to achieve economic Economics development Developments , peace and improve the quality of life for Southern Africans. Decent workDecent work and economic growthEconomic growth within the SADC Southern African Development Community (SADC) region are critical for the respective governmentsGovernments and for regional integrationRegional integration. The SADC Southern African Development Community (SADC) region has aligned the SDGs Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to its existing policiesPolicies and to other regional and international normative instruments and policy Policies documents in a bid to improve the life and welfare of citizens in the region. This paper seeks to investigate the challenges and opportunitiesOpportunities in achieving decent workDecent work within the SADC Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, with specific reference to South AfricaSouth Africa, LesothoLesotho, and ZimbabweZimbabwe.
