Abstract

This chapter reviews the history of magnetism, which is one of the main streams of solid-state physicsSolid-state physics and quantum physicsQuantum physics, and developments of itinerant-electron magnetism and exotic superconductivityExotic superconductivity in terms of spin fluctuationsSpin fluctuations are discussed from theoretical and experimental points of view. Spin-fluctuation theories beyond mean-field approximations are important to explain static magnetic properties as well as the dynamical properties of itinerant magnets. It was found that electron-pair formation due to magnetic spin fluctuationsSpin fluctuations can be realized in exotic superconductors. Problems in itinerant-electron systems continue to attract our interest.
