Abstract

Economic integration has a relatively long history. The Zollverein is often referred to as the first complete economic integration process, accomplished without force, starting as a custom union in 1818 when Prussia abolished its own internal customs duties. The Zollverein greatly facilitated the political unification of Germany, a process that unfolded in the 1860s and early 1870s (McCarthy 2006). The economic integration process that followed in the wake of the Zollverein and the unification of Germany was not typical. Most trade agreements are bilateral and do not proceed from a custom union type agreement.
