Abstract

The primary objective of this chapter is to provide a comprehensive review on the theme of innovation and the environment with specific reference to the role of eco-innovation. The chapter is structured to achieve several specific goals. Firstly, it delves into the relationships between innovation and environmental sustainability, examining how innovative processes and technologies can contribute to sustainable development. Secondly, it focuses on the definition and classification of eco-innovation, offering a detailed analysis of how this concept is understood and implemented by businesses. This includes a thorough exploration of the various types of eco-innovations and the factors that drive their adoption within the corporate sector. Thirdly, the chapter addresses innovative activities aimed at achieving climate neutrality, highlighting key initiatives and strategies that businesses and industries are employing to reduce their carbon footprint and transition towards more sustainable practices. Finally, the chapter analyses the primary drivers of the transition towards sustainability, with a particular emphasis on the role of science, technology and innovation (STI) policies. This includes an examination of how STI policies can facilitate the adoption of eco-innovations and support the broader goal of environmental sustainability.
