Abstract

Study abroad programs can be immensely rewarding for both student and professor alike. However, the high start-up costs for teaching a study abroad course can be intimidating. This chapter describes our experience teaching the economics of poverty and discrimination in South Africa. We not only discuss the reasons for choosing South Africa as a destination, we also lay out the details for assignments, planning, budgeting, and field trips. Our aim is that this chapter will help those wishing to lead a similar program by lowering their start-up costs so that more such programs can be offered.
