Abstract

The power of ideas and their connection to policy cannot and should not be underestimated. The Fund for American Studies (TFAS) was established in a time of great upheaval in American culture and politics and was founded, initially, as the Charles Edison Youth Fund in 1967. In 1987 it became The Fund for American Studies. Today, we also find ourselves living amidst social, cultural and political upheaval. Populism drives American politics, racial divisions and tensions are mounting, and American politicians are advocating for a kinder, gentler version of socialism to cure the diseases they claim ail us: injustice, inequality and power. The battle of ideas rages on and the powers fighting for loyalty are willing to sacrifice freedom and liberty in their quest. TFAS equips the next generation in that profound battle with programs that bring students to Washington, D.C. as well as international programs which combine classroom with on-the-job learning through internships. If liberty is to prevail, current and future generations of students must have both the passion to make the world a better place and be empowered with analytical tools which TFAS provides.
