Abstract

During the middle 1980s the concept ’Europe of Regions’ was advanced through public discussion and has been widely used since to give an image of the ongoing development of the united and more democratic Europe. European integration is believed to strengthen the power of regions not only in politics, but also in economy. As Caciagli (1990) has put it, “the modern Europe formed by nation states is developing into a post-modern Europe of Regions”. Even though this concept contains much wishful thinking and, to be sure, political persuasion, it can be seen as a challenging starting point for serious discussion also in regional studies.
