Abstract

Planning support systems can be defined as spatial decision support systems consisting of three important components, namely: data, models and geovisualisation (Klosterman 1999). In this chapter, we focus on geovisualisation in planning decisionmaking, in which it has two roles: firstly, collaboration, and secondly, exploration, particularly when it is integrated with the other two components. We report several prototypes of geovisualisation for exploration and collaboration in the context of urban and environmental planning. These prototypes integrate recent developments in internet GIS, geospatial virtual environments and multi-agent simulations. The techniques reported here have been used to develop a working planning support system based on the Internet.
