Generation Shift in the Swedish Labour Market

Abstract

There is an ongoing generational shift in the Swedish labour market that will lead to a high share of retirements in different sectors, regions and professions than in previous decades. As a result of the slower growth of the working-age population, the labour supply is expanding less rapidly in a large number of regions. The current trend will primly hit small and medium size regions hard. Future increases in the working population will consist of foreign-born residents while the number of those born in Sweden is expected to decrease. Case studies of two particularly affected regions indicate that the addition of labour to these labour markets may be significantly lower than before, while an increasing number of retirements will create vacancies that have to be filled. Further efforts are needed nationally and especially regionally to meet future labour demand in particularly affected regions. The analysis highlights various measures which can be taken in order to alter future labour market prospects regarding the supply of labour in the sense that more persons become available for work.
