Prospects for and Constraints to Investment in Environmentally Friendly Infrastructure in Western Nigeria

Abstract

Environmentally friendly infrastructures (EFIs) are eco-friendly infrastructures, which are a subset of green technologies (GT). These environmentally friendly infrastructures include energy infrastructures, such as solar panels and energy-saving bulbs (LED bulbs). The peoples’ perspectives and challenges with the use of environmentally friendly infrastructure will count if sustainable investments on it are to be attained. The study examines awareness, acceptability, uses, and constraints associated with the use of environmentally friendly infrastructures in rural western Nigeria. Primary data were generated from field survey of 160 households, conducted in Ekiti and Ondo states of Nigeria. Data were analyzed, using descriptive statistics, Likert scale, Chi-square, and regression analysis. Results show that only about 23% of respondents are fully using EFI, such as energy-saving bulbs, while about 48% are partially using it. Environmentally friendly infrastructures used in public places include those in schools and community health centers, and they are streetlights and water boreholes. Over 72% claim that cost and financial problems constitute major hindrances to the use of EFI technology, as well as limited skills and the presence of low-quality/fake products. Factors that determine the use of EFI technologies include the level of awareness of climate change, age, and income level. Therefore, there is the need to create more awareness on the use of EFI technologies, which may not be limited to introduction but detailed discussion, including merits and prospects of using EFI technologies, as well as public campaign on EFI via electronics and mass media.
