Abstract

This chapter focuses on the role of societal mobilizations in the democratization of electoral authoritarian regimes in Sub-Saharan Africa. It argues that collective actions by societal groups increase the power of oppositional political elites in two ways: By providing opposition parties with a political platform and asserting the constitutional framework and regulatory responsibility of the state. Thus, societal groups increase electoral competitiveness and propel the democratization process forward. The effects of societal mobilizations on electoral competitiveness are demonstrated in case studies and tested in multiple linear regression analyses of data on all authoritarian multi-party elections in Sub-Saharan Africa between 1990 and 2012.
