Abstract

This book explores why democratization processes in Sub-Saharan Africa have made so little progress despite more than two decades of multi-party politics on the subcontinent. It employs collective action theory to investigate the effects of societal mobilizations on democratization processes in Sub-Saharan Africa. The introductory chapter clarifies the empirical scope of the study, explains how collective action theory is applied to democratization processes, and shows how this theoretical approach leads to a new appreciation of the role of civil society in the struggle for democracy. The final section of the chapter presents the structure of the book.
