Abstract

The central issue underlying this investigation was the assumption that the distinctive type of business formation in East Germany, or factors relating to this, have a decisive influence on the problems and the economic performance of newly established small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the industrial sector in East Germany. With data collected from an empirical study conducted in East Germany in early summer 1993 as its base, the investigation involved analysing the problems experienced by East German business, investigating their economic situation and identifying the factors which influence the performance of SMEs in the industrial sector of East Germany.
