Estonia and Slovenia as Antipodes

In: Varieties of Capitalism in Post-Communist Countries

  • Clemens Buchen

Abstract

This chapter provides a comparative analysis of Estonia and Slovenia along the lines of the Varieties of Capitalism framework (Soskice 1999; Hall and Soskice 2001) as introduced in Chapter 1. Both countries have been identified as polar opposites against the backdrop of Varieties of Capitalism (VoC), appearing in Chapter 2 as antipodes regarding their institutional configurations, occupying extreme ends of a spectrum of transition economies according to the degree of non-market coordination. This is corroborated by Magnus Feldmann (2006), who analyses the industrial relations of both countries and comes to the conclusion that Estonia and Slovenia can be seen as the incarnations of a liberal and coordinated market economy.
