Abstract

This chapter deals with the relationship between the business leadership and the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship from the 1964 coup onward. Focusing particularly on the case of construction firms, the text addresses the support international and Brazilian capital provided to the coup and the construction of a pro-business order during the regime. It analyzes the significant presence of businessmen in key positions in the state apparatus and the public policies applied throughout the dictatorship that benefited specific economic groups. In particular, large contractors enjoyed state protection and a program of extensive infrastructure works within the regime’s process of “modernization” and accelerated growth. These economic groups then expanded and consolidated, maintaining pronounced economic and political power throughout the following decades.
