Abstract

During the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964–1985), the Amazon region became a prime target of development measures. As energy was to be the keystone of industrialization, state-owned Eletronorte built the huge Tucuruí Dam. Even though the regime’s secret intelligence tried to monitor local problems and contain resistance against Tucuruí, the dam generated unwanted subversive potential because of its massive impacts on both the environment and riverine populations. Specifically, the military’s business interests further damaged the regime’s reputation: while Eletronorte proved to be overwhelmed by new tasks, such as providing education and healthcare for the locals, the failure of the military company tasked with clearing the rainforest out of the future reservoir triggered a considerable scandal that shook the foundations of the dictatorship.
