Abstract

This chapter evaluates the provision of long-term finance by the merchant banks, particularly to the new industries. The involvement of the merchant banks in the emerging electrical supply industry will be considered in detail. In view of the contemporary concerns about the lack of finance for smaller businesses—the so-called Macmillan gap—the City’s response, including the fledgling growth of investment management activities, will also be reviewed.
