Abstract

The historiography of the British Trade Corporation has often focused on the alleged lack of support from the City and from the British Government. While both of these claims British Governmentare questionable, the close relationship between the British Trade CorporationBritish Trade Corporation BTC \band parts of British industry, especially heavy engineering companies, has been largely overlooked. This relationship was of great importance in the corporation’s early development, and its subsequent breakdown would also contribute significantly to the corporation’s eventual demise. There was also significant support from some of the joint-stock banks, creating a financial-industrial network of backers.
