Abstract

The Bubble Act was the nickname for a key piece of early English company law. The act, passed in 1720, is part of the South Sea Bubble story. Ron Harris has argued persuasively that the Bubble Act had little effect on the English economy. This volume will consider whether that was true outside England’s borders, from Scotland to the furthest reaches of the British Empire. It will also assess how the act was interpreted in popular culture and how it affected debates about economic theory. The essays offer new perspectives on the act’s relevance from its passage to its repeal in 1825 and beyond.
