Abstract

Over the last years, Mediterranean countries have undertaken substantial reforms in their financial sectors. This chapter develops a number of indicators to track the evolution and assess the adequacy of banking regulations using publicly available and comparable surveys for a large sample of countries since the early 2000s. To allow comparability across the Mediterranean, this chapter develops the measures for ten South and East Mediterranean countries (SEMCs) (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey) and seven EU Mediterranean countries (Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal and Spain).
