Abstract

The intense process of integration within the European Union countries and concomitant international trends have dramatically changed the structure, conduct and performance of the European financial and banking systems. Overall, each national banking system is theoretically more competitive, even if actually the retail segment of banking market still remains quite protected and represents in many respects the “last great barrier” towards the full integration of the European banking market. Nevertheless, the oligopoly of a wide number of retail banks will be gradually eroded under the pressure of competition and the less efficient banks will lose their power and share in the local markets.
