Abstract

In the closing years of the nineteenth century the British Empire was near its political peak. However, the emerging Continental superpower of Germany and the dynamic growth of the US, the largest producer of industrial output, were already foreshadowing the decline of Britain from the country’s position as the pre-eminent economic power. Nevertheless, through its foreign investment assets, colonial presence and its strength in international finance, Britain’s political and commercial self-confidence was at its height.
