The Mondragón Alternative

Abstract

There are numerous apparently viable but obscure alternatives to the profit-maximizing firm that focus on alternative strategies such as profit satisficing or creating sustainable employment. Among the most successful of these has been a group of worker owned and managed firms called the Mondragón Cooperatives. The success of such ventures hinges upon maintaining a common set of values and developing appropriate institutional structures that deal with issues of distributive justice and internal hierarchies.
