Abstract

The author explores the functions of mining companies in innovation processes and knowledge diffusion. Mining companies and investments are first outlined. Then, (1) the management and organisation of mining companies, (2) networks and knowledge transfer between local companies, multinationals, educational establishments, and research centres, and (3) knowledge transfer from other countries are explored through an investigation of career paths and travels of formally trained mining engineers and technicians, that is workers who were aimed for technical, strategic technical, middle management, management, and director positions. The chapter aims to demonstrate that mining engineers and technicians played key roles in the management and organisation of the new technology that was adopted by companies in this period.
