Abstract

By contrast with the land reforms, the application of new biological knowledge in grain production – Green Revolution – was a far more uniform and successful process. And yet, the Green Revolution lost steam quickly, did not produce dramatic effect outside the Indo-Gangetic Basin, and generated a great deal of environmental stress. Still, the direct and indirect effects of the process were enormous, as this chapter shows by drawing on the experiences of the individual countries.
