Abstract

In the 1950s Ireland suffered a severe capital scarcityCapital scarcity crisis which created a range of political, economic and financial tensions. The years 1955 and 1956 saw relations between Ireland’s ‘Victorian style’ cartelised banks and the state degenerate sharply over two connected issues: interest rate policies and general access by the government to borrowing controlled by the country’s banks.
