Abstract

Coffee has been a fundamental crop in Brazil since the beginning of the nineteenth century. We analyze the major changes over time in regions of production, size of units, and types of coffee produced. From a plantation system with enslaved labor it now involves small family farms as well as mechanized commercial producers. It now is a major producer of robusta as well as arabica coffee. São Paulo leadership has recently been replaced by new areas of production. Yet despite all these changes, Brazil remains the world’s largest producer and exporter of coffee.
