Abstract

Brazil is currently the world’s leading orange grower and the leading world exporter of all types of processed orange juice. It grows 35% of world oranges and accounts for 72% of the orange juice production. Three of every five glasses of orange juice consumed in the world today are produced at Brazilian factories and Brazilian juice makes up three quarters of orange juice exports in the world market. How this industry first emerged in Florida and then due to ecological crises declined, permitting the emergence of São Paulo as the leading producer in the second half of the twentieth century. This chapter studies the rise of the processing industry and its transition to NFC production with both national capital and International Trading companies. The complex evolution of the extraordinary value chains created is studied as well as the expansion of Brazilian processors into the International market.
