Abstract

Can Brazilian agriculture be sustained without further deforestation? What are the potential impacts of global warming on continued agricultural expansion? We describe the policies of the government meant to deal with these two issues and how successful they have been. These are the basic themes dealt with in this chapter. It explores the development of an important ecological movement within the country with the result that Brazil has strong laws and institutions designed to protect the environment, from control of virgin forests, the development of mixed pastoral and agricultural activity, to promotion of non-till farming. It has also involved the mechanization of the sugar harvest with major environmental impact. But the question remains can these laws and institutions survive right wing populist governments.
